Summary: This is a nice, shaded out and back trail in the lower part of the Angeles Crest Highway. I choose this as an easy weekday hike because it is so close to Pasadena. The first part is fairly steep incline but is completely shaded. After that it is more gradual climb up over the saddle and down into grizzlly flats. I never quite understood the significance of this place,but the cool pine grove was a nice place to stop for lunch. After the flats, the trail gets steeper, finally dropping into the Big Tujunga. Trailhead: Take the Angel crest Highway just past mile marker , park in turn-out on left side of road. The trail is kinda hidden but ascends the ridge behind you. Reviewed by AW on 8/13/2012 We found a dead hiker in Vasquez Creek because he got lost at Grizzly Flat, didn't have enough water, lost his glasses, couldn't find the trail. The trail is in TERRIBLE shape and is completely overgrown beacause it has not been maintained since the Station Fire. Take good maps and a GPS. Not for Summer hiking unless you are prepared to descend Vasquez Creek with ropes and rappelling gear. This is where Ertug got lost, and he died descending waterfalls and couldn't climb out. I would post a GPS track if I could, but doesn't appear to be an option here. I'll try to do it on SummitPost.org and Trails.com and sangabrielmnts.myfreeforum.org

Reviewed by MP on 2/25/2009 I thought the hike was overall OK. The first part of the trail is an easy fire road with a moderate incline, but once over the saddle you have to branch off on another fire road which is overgrown. It's not shaded until you get to the pines which is nice. Don't go in the summer though, lot's of bugs flying around and there is no shade until you get the pines. 
Reviewed by Andy on 9/17/2007 WARNING! This freakin' trail is HARD to find. We are talking every 50 yards or so you will lose the trail and be in the bush looking of it again. It can be infuriating. I honestly cant recommend this place unless you seriously want to trailblaze. Otherwise go to a better place that has a clear trail in the area. We didnt even get to the 'promised land' of the Pine trees because a man can only take so much..... 
Reviewed by SC on 7/1/2007 My Harrison map calls this trail Grizzly Flat Tr. Mid-June, did Mt. Lukens to Grizzly Flat loop(12.2 mi, 3200 elev gain/loss). Soon after passing Grizzly Flat itself, trail was on very steep slope, there was area of loose dirt with no vegetation, where a 12 ft. section of trail had narrowed, as much of it had slid down the slope. Very treacherous footing, very glad I had trekking poles to brace myself or I could have slid down 40 or 50 feet with nothing to grab. Needs maintenance. At bottom, trail branches off in many directions, could not find right one to cross Big Tujunga Cr., ending up walking through creek and dense brush w/poison oak half an hour before finding trail on other side of creek, then it was easy to follow.
Reviewed by chl on 6/26/2007 I was hoping to see the manzanita trees but unfortunately I never found the trail. Looking at the sign, it looks something like this: ---...--- where the dashes are the trail and the dots basically mean you're on your own. My advice is be attentive and beware of ticks.
Reviewed by Drake on 11/19/2006 We did this hike yesterday, when the weather was nice and warm. The hike uses the reworked Upper Dark Canyon Trail (starting on ACH at mile marker 30.02) to climb steeply up a ridge to a pine plantation. It then uses fire roads to drop down to the flats, a peaceful, quiet place. We did not see another soul on the whole 4 or 4.5 mile round trip.
Reviewed by Kim on 5/2/2005 Awesome hike - we did the loop - Parked at Vogel Flats picnic area - went to Mt Lukens then around. Once you get to mt lukens - you will have about 3-4 miles of fire road on way down - come to a three way road - hard left is Grizzly road- take that about two more miles then you will hit the trail. Fire road dead ends into it. Trail is pretty green and thick in some spots but still visable. Very pretty - wooded area next 3 miles to the rivers - you will have to cross it 5 times to get to parking lot of Vogel flats - water was waist high in some spots and heavy current- but doable - fun time - 12.5 miles round trip - love it 210- foothill blvd - big Tunjung hwy - 7miles to vogel flats parking lot Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
