Summary: There is a winding trail from the base of the Sunshine Express lift to the top of the mountain, but it can at times be covered by some snow. Your trail starts at the parking lot near the base of the Sunrise Express chair lift. Follow the cat track to the right of the chair lift about 100 yards or so till it crosses a single track trail, go left up the hill on this trail. If you loose the trail on the bottom half, go right until you break out onto the clear field which is the Marshmellow run. Follow it to the top of the Sunrise Express Chair lift and look for the green "hiker" sign marking the second 1/2 of the trail (it is at the top of Sunshine, not under the new Summit Express lift that goes to the top). This trail winds back and forth up the hill to the summit. You might have to play detective if there is snow, but the trail is very obvious and easy to pick back up. Once you reach the top of the Summit Express chair lift, it is an easy walk up to the summit. Trailhead: From Bend Oregon take Cascade Lakes Highway southwest out of town and follow the signs to the Sunshine Lodge parking area at the Mt. Bachelor ski resort. Reviewed by Dave on 9/5/2009 Thanks for the directions Craig! I hiked the Bachelor Butte summit trail on August 31st and can report that it was completely snow free and easy to follow. There was a green hiker sign leaning against a tree to mark the beginning of the trail. Start from the base of the Sunrise lift and follow a dirt road heading to the right (as you face the mountain) and you will see the sign and single-track trail on your left almost immediately. Have fun!
Reviewed by Mark on 8/17/2009 Craig's review is spot on. I would add the actual mileage is 3.1 miles to the summit (using a Garmin GPS to track my ascent). I suspect the 2.2 mile posting(s) are point-to-point. The hiker signs are frequently vandalized (read: missing or knocked down) and I would we wary of trusting them as they are sometimes just propped up. Read Craig's description carefully to avoid having to hike all over the mountain. The Sunrise chair down no longer operates during summer months. For a lift down you will need to hike about a 1/2 mile over and back up to Pine Martin Lodge. They may not charge for the ride down, but you have another long hike back to your car over at Sunrise Lodge. Best just to hike straight down. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
