Summary: This hike takes you up and down through this climbers paradise. Because this is a world famous climbing site and the weather is good year round, solitude is hit or miss. The amazing hike through the crooked river canyon is worth putting up with the crowds. The trail is mostly easy walking but gets quite strenuous as it climbs over the ridge. Stop occasionally and watch the climbers rise and fall on the solid rhyolite tuff. Many optional routes can lead you through this park, but one main trail exists throughout. Dont miss monkey face and other rock formations. After hiking this park, head over to the Cove Palisades and hike the Tam-A-Lau Loop. Trailhead: Heading north from bend on hwy 97 drive 7.5 miles to the town of Terrebonne. In Terrebonne turn right onto smith rock road. After 2.3 miles, take a left (still Smith Rock Road) another left and a right in immediate sucession staying on smith rock road the whole time. If this seems confusing, just follow the signs for smith rock state park. Park at the day use area unless you intend to camp at the walk in. Spectacular view of the mountains all around. Go the misery ridge way for the best view. Its worth it to take your time and get to the top and follow the river down. Its a magical place!! it was magnifacent i mean simply wonderful Actually, just outside Redmond, Oregon. Great parking. Day-use pass only $3. Steep trail from parking lot to river, but you can take the longer (and easier) trail just to the left. I walked most of the easy way to Monkey Face...BEAUTIFUL. Had to make many stops to take photos. Actually has non-smelly latrines! Lots of benches. Well-groomed trails -- a must for this hiker who gets poison oak easily. I'm not in good shape and I could do this hike. Just allow time and take water, sunscreen, tennies, and a hat. Wow, Gods creation is amazing. The geopgraphical study is one-of-a kind. The hike was great along the river. A few tough spots to get up and over the far end. You can take a few side trips up to some fantastic views down sheer cliffs. Many superb climbing spots for both sport and free climbers. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
