Poopenaut Valley

Highlights:

an arctic river, some trees, and maybe some poison oak
Near:Yosemite National Park, CA
Scenery:
Distance:2.1 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1300 ft
Hike Time:1.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This is an inverted hike. You go down, down, down for the first part to Poopenaut Valley. You descend over 1300 feet and then have to climb all the way up. In places the trail is steep, so you should be very sure footed going down, and careful on the way back up. You will be "poop"ed on the way out.

I had never seen this section of the park, and it was very hot, so a swimming place sounded nice. However, I can not imagine the Arctic Ocean being much colder. The High Sierra snowmelt doesn't make for good swimming, even on the hottest day.

I wondered, since Jason was an Argonaut from Argos did that mean someone here had something to do with poop? Unless you have hiked everywhere else in the beautiful realm of Yosemite, and really want to explore the unexplored, you should avoid this trek. There is a reason this is one of the only places in Yosemite that has poison oak.

Trailhead: From Highway 120 entering Yosemite driving east turn left (north) on Evergreen Road. Drive for about 7 and 1/2 miles and turn right on Hetch Hetchy Road. Follow this road for a little more than 5 miles past the ranger station and to a sign marked Poopenaut Valley. You can park along the road and begin your descent. The trailhead is easy to spot. I hiked this valley 4 days ago and since im not in very good shape is was hard. on the way down its very steep and hard on the legs, there are a few nice spots to look at but your going so fast down the hill you dont get to enjoy it that much. My friends and i camped at the bottom by the stream and that was nice, not too many people there so it gives you privacy. the next day when we hiked back up it was very hard, very steep, it took me and a friend 1 hr and 45 min but it only took our other friends 1 hr and 10 min, so i guess it depends who you are. I might not do it again but i would tell someone else about it if there looking to work out there legs for sure.
