Summary: The high point, literally and figuratively, of this hike is Duncan Knob, a rocky peak with an uninterrupted view, located along the ridge of Catback Mountain. The circuit begins in Crisman Hollow and climbs to Peach Orchard Gap. Before the trail begins to descend, a short easy scramble leads to Duncan Knob with exceptional views from its rocky ledges. From here the trail descends into Duncan Hollow where it follows the stream south, then turns to cross Middle Mountain. Trailhead: I-66 W to US 29 at Gainesville; West on US 29 to US 211 at Warrenton; west on US 211; cross Skyline Drive and continue on US 211 to New Market Gap. Directly across from Massanutten Visitors Center turn right onto Crisman Hollow Drive (FDR 274). Follow route 3.3 mi to Scothorn Gap Trail on right with small parking area. Note: FDR 274 may be closed for a week or so in the early spring time to avoid damage to road during the spring thaw. Sometimes the trail markers are a little off distance wise. The route straight forward: Scothorn gap trail. Left at first Tm. When the blazes change from yellow to blue as a crossroads turn right. The Duncan Knob blazes will be a left off this trail. Then follow the blue blazes back down the back side of the moutain and turn right at the next TM, back onto orange/peach blazes. Then following this trail takes you all the way back to the first TM from the top side, so go straight across to return to the parking lot. The trail is clear and the views are great, especially from the top. A fun hike for sure. We just spent a cold December weekend camping by the Knob. There is a great campsite right where the trail breaks off to head up the rock scramble. Plenty of firewood. Watch out for wind if it gets stormy, though.
