Chocorua Piper - Weetamoo rock loop

Highlights:

Fantastic view of peaked summit and surrounding mountains
Near:Conway, NH
Scenery:
Distance:9 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2660 ft
Hike Time:5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Loop

Summary: The Piper trail is wide and very easy at the start. It is well traveled and well maintained. In the fall you will have excellent and exciting views of the summit and of the Carter ledge on your right. I like to think of it as a 'mini materhorn' because the peak is so sharp and vertical.

This is one of my favorites because the summit is very impressive. I have hiked it in every season. You need crampons in the winter. It can be very windy at the top. You have great views of the White Mountains including Mt. Washington.

The Weetamoo rock trail can be a bit of a slog on the way down but there is a huge boulder to look at - hence the name.

There are several streams on the Piper trail where you can replenish your water supply if you have a filter.

Trailhead: From North:

Take route 16 south from Conway until you see the While Mountain National Forest hiking sign next to a variety store on your right. Follow the dirt road back to the parking lot. This is the Piper trail.

From South:

Take route 16 north from Chocorua until you see the While Mountain National Forest hiking sign next to a variety store on your left. Follow the dirt road back to the parking lot. This is the Piper trail.

There is a $3.00 fee and change is not available but there is a store on route 16 just 300 yards from the trailhead. (Lat:43.56 Lon:-71.13)

Easy for most parts except moderate on rock face. The views of the Lake were amazing. A quick morning or afternoon hike.

This was a great hike, and the view from the top is spectacular, however that's not why I'm writing this. I would like to note that the map from the Mapquest link on this site is inaccurate, it shows the beginning of the trail to be much further south than it actually is. This added at least an hour to the drive getting to the mountain, and I hope that this entry will keep others from having the same problem. From the map that this site links to, it looked as though rte. 202 would be almost a straight shot from Portland, ME (where we were coming from)to the mountain, but either 302 or 25 would be better.

I enjoyed the first 4 miles on the Piper trail to the summit. I have to disagree with the rating of moderate. I found the last 1/2 mile to the summit difficult climbing. The trail is marked well, but leaning over boulders looking for markers is hairy. My son spoke with a man who said he had hiked the Piper trail 80 times. Views from the summit are spectacular
