Summary: Ferry Beach State Park is located off Maine Route 9 on Bay View Road between Old Orchard Beach and Camp Ellis in Saco. A stand of tupelo (black gum) trees, rare at this latitude, can be seen in this 100-acre area, which offers a sweeping view of miles of white sand beaches between the Saco River and Pine Point.

Long before highways were common north of Boston, beaches provided travelers relatively safe and easy transportation routes. A ferry crossing at nearby Saco River served beach travelers, and thus Ferry Beach State Park received its name.

A picnic area, nature trails, guided nature programs, and changing room are available.

Trailhead: Ferry Beach State Park.

From Saco Maine take route 9 north towards Camp Ellis. Follow signs for Ferry Beach State Park.

We never made it to the main parking lot much less the actual trail - after October 1, you must park out on the highway and walk in... our 3 year old son was less than thrilled with the 10 minute walk on the road in that we finally called it quits and never even made it to the main park. Bummer. It would be nice to have known how close we were to actually getting to the "start" of the hike.

Long Beach walk and good trail system. Nice flat, wide trails. Looks like a good place for winter walking.
