Summary: Mt Monadnock is reputed to be one of the most hiked mountains in the world with over 125,000 people climbing it every year. The trails are very steep in places and rocky. The views are ok but there are few mountains to make the views truly exciting. I might hike it again but I won't run back. There are a lot of people on the trails and at the top. One man was hiking it in flip-flops. It is a nice mountain but there are others which have a more exciting view. As with any mountain, please be prepared with good footwear, water, food and check with the rangers at the State Park. PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED! See http://www.nhstateparks.org/ParksPages/Monadnock/Monadnock.html Trailhead: From Jaffrey NH follow the road signs to Monadnock State Park. There is a $3.00 entrance fee per person. Seniors and children are free. Jaffrey is located in south western NH near the Mass border. Make sure you get a map from the ranger. Near the White dot trailhead there is a scale that you can use to weigh your pack. PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED! The ranger said White Cross was slippery - and after seeing the amount of snow, we decided to stay on the more traveled trail. White Dot is very steep - and it was quite tough because the snow/ice made it slippery and hard going. Snow treads are a must in these conditions - ski-poles help too. It was a sunny 49 degrees though - and clear. The view was nice and it felt good to push our way to the top. The descent was a lot easier - except for a couple of steep sessions where it was icy. There were a few people - but I definitely wouldn't call it crowded. My friend and I hit Monadnock yesterday and I liked it more than when I've done it in the past. We took the Spellman trail which by many accounts is the most challenging route up the mountain. The challenge was worth it as we didn't see another person on the way up (despite the very crowded peek) and the views were great. At points on Spellman, you feel like you are on bare-faced cliff sides overlooking the valley. I suggest getting off the White Dot/White cross highways and try Spellman for a more enjoyable ascent. I've hiked Mt. Monadnock several times. I wouldn't hike the main highways again (White Cross, White Dot trails), as they are too crowded. Some other lesser used trails have good views and varied terrain: Cliff Walk, Pumpelly, Lost Farm. Yes, it's not the White Mountains, but it's still a lovely hike and can be challenging to the novice. Cold up top even in the summer. For someone who hasn't hiked in several years and who wanted to introduce his 6-year-old daughter to the beauty of the NH mountains, this hike couldn't have been better. It was challenging for both of us, but the great views and sense of accomplishment were completely worth it. We took White Dot up and White Cross/Spruce Link down. Though crowded (it was a spectacular Memorial Day weekend), seeing extra hikers helped a bit with motivation. Monadnock was the first White Mountain I ever climbed. The views are excellent from the summit and the terrain is challenging (but not impossible!). The only reason I did not give the hike 5 stars is because of the numerous crowds present at most parts of the hike. Monadnock is a must do and has inspired me to climb more mountains in my lifetime! Hiked this in December 06 and it was an enjoyable hike. There were quite a few people on the trail despite it beign mid-week and late December. Trails were in great shape. A little icy near the top but not bad at all. Great views. for pics... http://home.maine.rr.com/absolutebaseball/ Very nice mountain. I'd hiked it a number a number of times years ago and we took the White Cross or White Dot trails, I've climbed it 4 times since Labor Day now, all on other trails: Cliff Trail, Lost Farm, Parker, Old Toll Road, Pemberly, Red Dot, Hedge Hog. They are all good. This is not a place for flip flops, or hiking without water and in the early spring/late fall remember that conditions at the top can be like mid winter. The staff do a good job covering for people who don't really know what they are doing. I loved hiking this mountain. When you're hiking up, you think it's just hard excersise and you want to walk down but when you get up there, you want to stay forever. Then when you leave and look at the pictures, you just want to go back and do it again. It was exersise, yes, but it was an AMAZING site!when you do this, it's best to do it with a group of friends and family. I did it with my mom's side of the family and we raced and helped each other out. It was just so fun! Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
