Osceola from East Peak

Highlights:

Breathtaking vistas of Kancamagus wilderness, steep incline
Near:Conway, NH
Scenery:
Distance:6.68 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2809 ft
Hike Time:4.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: A steep ascent up the east peak of Osceola. A tiring hike. At times the pitch was up to 54 degrees. There is very little view from the east peak. Trail from east peak to Osceola proper is rocky and steep but there is one very nice hand over hand section as you ascend the spine of Mt Osceola. I was fascinated how dogs were doing it!

The views from Osceola are very nice. You can see the valley down towards Lincoln NH. The map shows that there is a tower but the tower is gone.

Mt Osceola is an easy hike from the southwest side (Waterville valley) so there are lots of people on the summit. I saw two guys who were getting drunk.

If you go in the winter crampons are a must!

See my Greeley Ponds hike for a hike in the same area.

Trailhead: From Conway NH take route 112 (aka Kancamagus Highway) west towards Lincoln NH. After crossing thru Kancamagus pass you will descend down to a hair pin turn. The trailhead will be on your left as you reach the broad sweeping turn to the right.

It will cost $3.00 to park here and change is not available.

From Lincoln: The trailhead is 9 miles east of Exit 32,1-93 on the Kancagmagus Highway. (Lat:44.03127 Lon:-71.51659)

Great hike, spectacular views from the southern Whites. Winter attempts become much more strenuous due to steep sections on the side of East Osceola.
