Summary: A boring hike with limited views. I tried to bike it but it is too steep and rocky. All the 1-3 inch rocks just spun out from under my pedals. A skilled mtn bilker might do better than I did. There is a fire tower at top which is occasionally manned by the Waterboro fire dept. Call them for details. The views from the tower are excellent if the tower is open and if you can brave the stairs and if the fire watcher is not busy ... but if the tower is closed the views are terrible. There is also a lot of broken glass at the top and the trails are heavily used by 4 wheelers. This hike is only 1 mile total if you drive all the way up to the gate but a high clearance vehicle with 4 wheel drive is recommended. Trailhead: Just after Lakeside Variety in Waterboro Center (near Ossipee pond) take route 5 south and bear right past the old fire station onto Ossipee mountain road and immediately bear right onto McLucas road. Proceed up the dirt road 4/10s of a mile and there is parking on the left. Or ... continue on the dirt road for a total of 2.1 miles and park at the gate. You should only continue if you have a vehicle with good clearance and maybe even four wheel drive. This is a semi maintained road and can be quite bad after a hard rain or in the spring. My kids liked exploring the exposed rock at the top. Nice easy hike, but much easlier by snowmobile in the winter time, and also without the foliage the views are greater!! I have both hiked it as well as blasted up it with the four wheelers, the hike is weak. If your hiking listen for the ATV's cause there isnt much regard by them for anyone on foot.
