Near:Gorham, NH

Distance:8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3200 ft
Hike Time:5 hours

Summary: Climb the Carter-Moriah Trail. Terrain starts easy on the first mile of the trail, but quickly becomes moderately to strenously steep. When you have hiked almost 2 miles, you will pass through Mt. Surprise. You may want to spend some time on it, as it has great views of the Presidential Range. Think of it as a preview of what you will see when you reach Mt. Moriah.

Continue up the trail, passing some blueberry bushes (snacks in summer). 2 more miles of rocky terrain will bring you to an intersection with a sign for Mt. Moriah. A few feet more and you will have conquered another NH 4K peak, and enjoy beautifull views of the Presidential Range, and looking to the other side, all the way up to Maine and Canada.

If you want to convert this into a backpack, continue the C-M, untill you merge with the Appalachian Tr. Take the AT in the S direction. Rest on the Imp Shelter. Retrace AT untill Moriah Brook Tr that takes you into Wild River Campsite.

Trailhead: Rt 2 or Rt 16 to Gorham, NH. Continue on Rt 2 East for a short distance just untill you cross the railroad tracks. Turn right into this dead end road. There is parking space at the end. Trailhead sign is visible from there.

If you decide to convert this hike into a backpack, we suggest you leave a car at the Wild River Campground. It can be reached by continuing on Rt 2 East. Soon after crossing the Maine state line, turn south into Rt 113. At Evans Brook, you will follow a dirt road directly to the south for 5.7mi that will bring you to the campground.
