Summary: The shut-ins trail traverses the Castor River. It is level at this point. There are many easy access points to the river. Be aware of rainy periods this river can get up quite high at times. The trail goes uphill for a short distance, when you get to the top there is a scenic overlook there. Follow the trail back to the parking lot. Notice on the map the two old cemetaries located on this property. If you find the graveyard with the McMurtreys buried there, they were the original land owners. Mr. McMurtrey was born in 1768 his wife Sarah, 1773. Please note that hunting is permitted on this property! Trailhead: From Fredericktown court square. go east 1 block, turn left on Lincoln Dr. go 1 mile to 00/72 junction . Turn right (east) on 72, follow 72 to "J" (approx 2 miles), turn left on "J", go 4.4 miles to "W" turn right on "W". "W" will turn from blacktop to gravel at this point you are now on Madison county rd 208. (From "J" & "W" intersection to the Conservation area sign is 2.3 miles.) At the fork in the road turn left go .9 miles to parking area. When you get to the fork in the road, stop and get an area map there.
