Summary: This hike is a pleasant out and back hike up a canyon that curves around Kent's peak with an excellent view at the top of Elkhorn peak. The trail was formerly a jeep road before the forest road closure and is still in use as a multi-use trail. At the start, the hillsides are fairly open with pockets of Juniper and maple, with cottonwoods and chokecherry in the bottom of the canyon. Good views of the geological formations are visable on the front side of Kent's Peak. As you go deeper into the canyon the junipers and maples give way to pines and aspens. Expect to see mule deer with the possibility of seeing elk, moose and cougar. The canyon is dry for the first mile or two but a nice spring near the top of the canyon reaches to within a mile or so of the trailhead before disappearing back into the ground. Trailhead: From the center of Malad (at the four way stop) head northwest on Bannock street for 6.2 miles. This paved road follows section lines and makes several 90 degree turns working in a NW direction. Exit the oil onto gravel on 3900 W. Follow this 1 1/2 miles turn right on 5000 N for 1/4 mile then left at the Kents/coop canyon signs.follow this road 2 miles. It is ungraded and hi clearance vehicles are suggested. If closed gates are encountered, please close them behind you. There is a large grassy area for parking, just before dropping into a steep canyon. This is the official end of road per forest road closures.
