Oconee Station & Station Cove Falls

Highlights:

18th century buildings and beautiful 60 ft waterfall
Near:Walhalla, SC
Scenery:
Distance:3.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:800 ft
Hike Time:2 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: Just note that the Park is closed this year in Jan and February. I went 1/2/04 and there happened to be someone there. You can still access the Station Cove falls from OSR, but at the Historic site, there are a few buildings that were built in the late 18th century that are worth looking at. If closed, you can still park at the fall trailhead, and cross OSR to get on the trail leading to the site. From the historic site, you follow the signs along the trail around a pond (can go either way around to vary route). This trail leads to OSR and crosses to the fall trail. There is a bulletin board with information and then it is about 0.5 miles to the falls and takes you through a swamp like area/cove forest area and would probably be beautiful in the spring and fall. Old trees are also all around. The falls allow up-close access and is a 60 ft stepped waterfall that forms from headwaters atop Station Mountain.
Trailhead: From Walhalla, drive north on SC 11 for about 8 miles (not exactly sure about that number, but close). Just make sure when you pass SC183, drive 1.5 more miles north on SC 11 and turn left (northwest) onto Oconee Station Road (OSR). Oconee Station Historic Site is approximately 2.1 miles ahead on the right. Enter the site and park in the parking area. The trailhead is 200 feet back up the entrance driveway. Whenever the site is closed, or if you just want to walk to Station Falls, you can use an optional trailhead, which is a parking area (limited to 4 vehicles) on the left side of OSR, approximately 0.2 mile from the site entrance. We really enjoyed the hike. It was a nice trail, easy to walk but not so easy that it didn't feel like exercise. The waterfall was beautiful, the trees interesting, there were more kinds of mushrooms than I could have imagined and we saw 2 of the brightest green beetles I've ever seen! I would definitely hike again, but next time I would bring a lunch and eat at the falls.

My grand nephew and I hiked the whole trail, then ran into my sister and her husband at the Station and hiked the waterfall trail again that day, 3/24/07. We really enjoyed all of it and if he gets his way as usual we will go again. It's an easy hike with a "resting tree".

This trail head is a bit confusing. You start on one side of the road, cross over a parking lot and enter the trail head again. I did not get to take in the whole view due to a thunder storm and lightning crashing around us at the waterfall. We ran back to the car. If you start at the trail head you can see the old house and store which is quite interesting.

Station Cove Falls: Easy 1/2 mile hike on clear path. Trail leads to bottom of 60' falls. Can get very close to falls with clear rocks in river(?) to rest and snack. Will go in winter to see if falls ice.

This was the perfect hike for a quick decision and an afternoon's event.
