Summary: An old jeep path winds it way up the mountain. This means that you will spend quite a bit of time on some switch backs near the ridge. There is an AMC hut just off the AT about .2 miles from the summit trail. There are several brooks crossings, one which might be difficult in high water. There was much deeper snow here than on Lafayette which is the next big peak over. If you do it in the winter you will need snowshoes. Trailhead: Route 3 between Twin Mtn and Franconia Notch. Consult Map - trailhead is at five corners and is marked by a White Mountain 'Pay' box where $3.00 per day is charged. On route 3 there is no sign saying 'Garfield Trail'. This is NOT the Gale River Trail which is next door. The road in is only open in the summer so in the off season the hike is 6 miles one way, in the summer the hike is 5 miles one way.
