Summary: The trail starts out crossing some foot bridges and climbing the ridge. At 2.2 miles you will come to a side trail that leads to Hen Wallow Falls. This a great rest stop as it was a popular Sunday destination of early park visitors . Return to the top of the trail to continue on as you will have a few stream crossings before you ascend Snake Den Mtn. There are many varieties of trees in this old growth forest as well as bountiful colors of trillium. You will have one tricky stream crossing will some careful rock hopping. Once to the other side you are in the Sugar Cove area which campsite 34 is located. This is a open and pretty campsite andt has 15 tent sites. It is not rationed and very popular so arrive early to ensure your spot of choice.
Trailhead: From Knoxville: I-40 East to Exit #440 Highways 321 & 32 turn right off exit ramp. Stay on Highway 32 South to Cosby Campground (Highway 321 will go to right to Gatlinburg) about two miles turn right into Cosby Campground. Park in designated hiker's parking lot on left. Trailhead just below picnic area marked Gabes Mtn Trail.
If you chose to stay overnight you will need to register at the ranger's station. There is no fee but a permit is required.
