High Sierra Loop - Merced Lake to Sunrise Camp

Highlights:

Wondrous granite mountains, secret waterfall, and the amazing Long Meadow
Near:Yosemite National Park, CA
Scenery:
Distance:10 miles
Elevation Gain:2000 ft
Hike Time:6.5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Point to Point

Summary: This hike starts out westward along the Merced River, with the water flowing over hard granite, with stark rock faces all about. As the trail crosses Echo creek, you can follow the creek up stream about 300 yards to a lovely hidden waterfall. At a junction a few miles from Merced Lake, the trail heads due north towards Sunrise camp. This section of trail has breathtaking views, but much of the forest appears to dying from a beetle infestation.

At about 8 miles or so into the hike the trail moves west, then south, dropping into the spectacular long meadow. Sunrise High Sierra Camp is set on a bluff overlooking this meadow and has one of the loveliest settings in the Sierras.

We took a rest day at this camp and hiked to the Cathedral Lakes. The knife edges summit of Cathedral Peak viewed along this trail is one of the most memorable of our week long trip.

Trailhead: This hike is part of the High Sierra Loop, a series of 6 camps located between Tuolumne Meadows and Yosemite Valley. These camps have facilities for backpackers, but the best way to go is to stay in the tent cabins which includes great meals. Most of the camps can be reached via a day hike from either Yosemite Valley or Tuolumne Meadows.

This particular hike starts in the back country at Merced High Sierra Camp and climbs 2000 feet into Sunrise Camp. (Lat:37.87584 Lon:-119.3353)
