Summary: Located along the Hannacroix Creek, this nature preserve is a pleasant location for hking, cross country skiing and nature watching. A trail map is available at the trailhead kiosk. From the kiosk, take the Irving Trail up the hill. A loop trail on the left (Red Trail) leads to a scenic vista and passes some interesting rock ledges. Continue on the blue trail down to the creek level. The trail continues along the banks of the creek. Finally, you reach a short spur trail on the right that leads to a nice waterfall. From the parking area, you can also access the Hudson River Intertreptive Trail by following the trail across the highway (Rte 144). The River Trail passes a wetlands area and crosses a unique bridge made from recycled plastic. It ends at the shore of the Hudson River. Trailhead: Take Thruway (Interstate 87) to Exit 22. Head South on NY Rte 144. Pass through Coeymans. The trailhead is on the right side, just past the Albany County line (and 5 miles from Thruway exit). The photos can be seen at: http://picasaweb.google.com/jaknaperohsik/HannacroixFalls?feat=directlink There are three views of the fall. If you follow the Irving trail it leads you to the top of a large rock. This is a very good view of the fall from some distance. Then you can take the little trail to the left of the rock and get right close to the top of the fall. The pictures here were taken after going on the little trail to the right of the rock which takes you right at the bottom of the falls. Splendid view! Nice hiking. Trails mostly through the woods. The falls were nice! I'll be back to explore some more of the trails. I hiked there as a child. I grew up in Coeymans New York. Such a peaceful place. I walked all the trails... nothing exciting exept the falls. The falls where fabulous... I hike last weekend and still alot of water from the spring runoff. Would recomend seeing the falls if nothing else. I would go back in the winter to snow shoe. I am a local citizen and have enjoyed this area for years. The falls here at the preserve are great. A snowshoe hike is one of the many outings that I enjoy in the preserve. I have recently brought a group of scouts to hike and find a few geocaches. The day was crisp and clear. The Hannacroix creek was just as blue as the sky. I will continue to wander these woods for many years to come. Although my kids(6 & 10 yrs) are sometimes reluctant hikers, they loved the hike to the waterfall on a beautiful fall day. We climbed on top of the large rock at falls trail end for a rest & snack and had a beautiful look down at the falls. We took the Blue trail on the return and enjoyed it, however found the markers were geared towards folks hiking in on it, rather than out. This was a great little hike! Followed blue trail to the creek, which happened to be frozen still this time of the year ( March 06' ). Great little area for snapping photos. Eventually you will come to a "V" intersection just near a tree with 3 trail markers signs on it. To the right will lead you to a small waterfall, which is a pretty little place for more photos. Not really a good place for picnic as there is not a wide enough area to set up, but just all around good place for a "breather" and scenic rest. Continue along the trails marked "Paper Mill Trail" will give you about a .5 mile hike, eventually leading you to trails end at a community church retreat center. A 4 out of 5 star trail! **** I hike this area often and find it very peaceful. I especially like the area surrounding the remains of the 19th century paper mill that sits just below the falls. The dam for the paper mill was situated on top of the falls. The headrace to the old paper mill is still indentifiable. Great place for a picnic!
