Summary: This is a relatively easy trail to follow, although it's not signed or blazed, providing your knowledge of a map, compass and/or GPS. The Groundhog Ridge Manway is popular and steep but well graded. The trail meanders along the ridge line with a direct approach to Mt Cammerer.Halfway up the ridge you will cross the Lower Mt Cammerer Trail( although it's not signed) you will cross this trail as your trail appears just across into the woods. The last 1/2 mile is the tough part and a sense of adventure begins here as you swim through Laurel and Rhodo and then rock srambles. You will pop out onto top of a small peak and get you first glimpse of the tower and the mountains.More swimming and scrambling before you reach the base of White Rock the foundation of the lookout tower. After lunch return using the spur trail that leads to the Appalachian Trail.Follow the AT south to Low Gap Trail then to Cosby Campground, follow signs to hiker parking.
Trailhead: From Knoxville: I-40 East to Exit #440 Highways 321 & 32 turn right off exit ramp. Stay on Highway 32 South to Cosby Campground (Highway 321 will go to right to Gatlinburg) about two miles turn right into Cosby Campground. Park in designated hiker's parking lot on left(Leave one car here for return trip). Go back to park entrance turn right on Hwy 32 go 3.4 miles to a small gravel parking area enough for 3-4 cars. Trailhead is straight ahead 50' starting between the two white NPS Boundary signs.

Great hike. Was engaged in fire tower Christmas 2003. Memorable moment. If you want her to say 'yes yes', then you must take this hike and ask your sweety too!

wonderful trail but very very hard. You get almost no breaks and the trail can be very easily lost if not careful. The last mile or so is so steep that climbing on hands and knees is necessary. In some places the trail is down right dangerous. would only reccomend for experienced hikers. would advise to only go on trail in the cooler months because this area is known for snakes. But trail is still extremely beautiful.
