Summary: Mahoosuc Notch is known as the 'hardest mile of the AT'. This is a classic new england notch, and fortunately it does not have a road thru it. This is a fun and interesting hike. There is mild elevation gain but the terrain in the notch is rugged. Worth checking out but bring good foot wear and plan on temps 10 degrees below forecast. This should not be attempted when conditions are slippery. Other routes involving an over night are possible. Trailhead: From Berlin NH take the Success Pond Road (dirt) approximately 11 miles until you come to a sign for the 'Notch trail' which is also 'Shelter Brook'. There is a parking area a short distance from the turn and a small trail sign on the left hand side of the road. In Berlin the Success Pond road is behind the mill on the East side of town. Please note that this area is not easily accessible in the winter. More specific directions however: Take Route 2 from Gorham to Berlin. Ignore the factory on your left as you cross from Gorham to Berlin. In Berlin the road will split, follow the Right fork. Take a right on Coos road and an immediate left onto Hutchins. The old factory will be on your left. About a mile down Hutchins you will see a large dirt road on your right marked only with a brown "OHLV Parking" sign. This is Success Pond Road and it is UNMARKED. Follow 10.5 miles until you see the white trail sign for "Notch Trail" on your right. Drive 0.5 miles in to the trailhead (on your left). The trailhead is NOT at the end of this road, so watch for the signs. I just completed this up and back hike. I took my time and spent roughly 3 hours in the Notch itself going out and back. Notch trail is in very good condition and well marked. If you drive in from the Grafton Notch side .. from route 26 it is about 8.5 miles to the trail head. The dirt road is first labeled York Pond Road.. then becomes Success Pond road.. road is in great condition Wonderful challenge in the Maine section of the White Mountains. Plan on an hour or more for this not-quite-a-full-mile section of the Mahoosuc range. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
