Summary: Lake James State Park is a small park on the shores of Lake James. Once you hike the trails and see the surrounding development you'll understand why it was so important to protect some of the shoreline. These trails include a loop hike and two other "out and back" trails to nice viewing platforms of the lake. When hiking to the Lake Channel Overlook, stay to the right when you get to the campground. All trails are well maintained and easy to follow. They start from the end of the parking lot opposite from the office. During the summer this park gets a lot of use (especially from swimmers and picnickers) so be warned. Parking is often a problem at this time. Trailhead: From I-40, take the Nebo/Lake James exit (exit 90) and head north. After a half mile, turn right onto Harmony Grove Road, and follow it for 2 miles to a stoplight. Proceed straight across the intersection and past Nebo Elementary School to a stop sign. Turn right onto NC 126, and follow the signs to the park entrance 2.3 miles on the left.
