Marilla Reservoir

Hemlock woods and the promise of a trail (1 mile)

Elevation Gain:10 ft
Hike Time:0.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Loop

Summary: With only a few inches of snow on the ground, I hiked the short circut around the reservoir. It's hard to know what the "trail" is like without the snow but the survey stakes mark where theTuna Valley Trail Association is developing the 1 mile loop around the lake. The trail is in it's early stages of construction but the three bridges are complete.

Aside from the dam, it is clearly not a natural lake as the hemlock trees along the water's edge are planted in disturbingly neat rows. But to the other side of the trail the woods take on the much more random placement of natural 2nd growth woods. Hiking in winter you can clearly see the tracks of animals around the reservoir. The pines and snow make it a quiet walk.

The southern terminus of the 7-mile Indian Pipe Trail is across the street and it looks like there may be plans to develop trails further south from the reservoir, perhaps reaching the trail system in the nearby Allegheny National Forest.

Trailhead: There is a pull-off at Reservoir No. 3 (Marilla Reservoir) off of Route 346 a little more than 5 miles west of Bradford. There are no amenities, no camping, fires, swimming or ice fishing. Fishing allowed from the shore. (Lat:41.95462 Lon:-78.7405)
