Summary: Hoodlebug was the local nickname for the self-propelled passenger coach that ran on this line up until 1940. The narrow trail has varied surfaces, mostly rough asphault but some dirt and gravel areas. There are occasional places with minor grades and for a block in Homer City the trail follows the road. PennDOT is currently extending the trail South to Rt 22 as part of it's Rt. 119 construction with plans to eventually connect it to the West Penn Trail to Saltzburg. It will also connect to the Blacklick Creek Trail and eastward to the Ghost Town Trail. Ultimately, the trail complex will comprise over 60 miles of rail-to-trail. Trailhead: The "official" parking area is located in a the Continuing Education parking lot of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. (N40 36.439 W79 10.259). From Route 119 (either N or S) take the Wayne Ave exit north the the third traffic light. Turn left at the Hoss's Restaurant. Make the next left onto Kolter Drive then the next left to the Parking area. It's a quarter mile of broad bike lane down to the trailhead. There are no amenities. As an alternative, you could probably park at the Hoss's Restaurant itself though there is no guarantee that the management will become perturbed. There is also parking at the Homer CityFloodwayl Park (N40 32.651 W79 9.709) From Route 119, turn onto Route 56 West in Homer City. Turn right (north) onto Main Street. Follow Main Street through one traffic light and across the Yellow Creek bridge. The park is visible on the right just past the bridge. There are seasonal restrooms available here.
