Summary: This hike will take you to the top of Kennedy Peak (7,540 ft) which is located in the remote Galiuro Mountains of Southern Arizona. Though this hike is not terribly difficult, it does require good trail finding skills for the trail, in places, is faint and can be difficult to follow and locate. But for the most part the trail is strait forward and easy to follow. Be prepared for stretches of sustained climbing and possibly loose footing. The summit offers good views of the Catalinas, Rincons and Pinalenos mountain ranges. The pines on the summit obscure the southern portion of the range so one does have to look around for a good viewing area to get a good look at Basset Peak.
Trailhead: Located about 50 airline miles northeast of Tucson, the remote Galiuro Wilderness is accessible only by dirt roads. From Safford drive west on US Highway 191 for 17 miles to Arizona Highway 266. Turn right and drive 19 miles to Bonita. Turn north onto Arivaipa Road and drive another 19 miles to FR 253. Turn left and drive 8.4 miles to the signed trailhead. (Lat:32.67029 Lon:-110.28197)
