Summary: The Forney Ridge Trail is a rocky trail that appears to be a natural run off for water on top of Forney Ridge. The trail is not blazed but has sufficient signs with directions as it crosses the Appalachian Trail and others along the way. This is a good hike for great sunrise or sunset photographs. We hiked predawn to catch a sunrise and didn't have any problems using headlamps. If you're unsure of hiking in no light situations, you could get some great photos from the parking area and then hike down. You will know when you reach the bald, by existing the deep forest into the open air with grass, wildflowers and numerous species of tress. The best view is to the southwest at Devils Court House Ridge. When you head back up the trail about 1/10 of a mile from the parking area you will meet up with the Appalachian Trail take the 1/2 mile trek to the Clingmans Dome Overlook and you will not be disappointed with the views from top of the highest elevation in the East.
Trailhead: From Gatlinburg; 441 South to Newfound Gap ( approximately 20 miles), turn right on Clingmans Dome Road (just past Newfound Gap Parking Area). Then 7 miles to Clingmans Dome Parking Area. Trailhead to left of paved walkway that leads to Clingmans Dome Overlook. Trail name is Forney Ridge Trail.

We hiked to the bald on November 9, 2008. The day was clear and cool with a slight breeze. While the trail is not nearly as steep as a trail like the Chimney Tops, it was still a good challenge because of the rocky terrain. It will provide some good moderate exercise both out and back. It can get quite wet in places though. The real value in this trail to us was the relative seclusion (we saw only 3 total hikers) and the incredible view from the bald. We can only imagine what this would look like during peak color or if the wild flowers were blooming. It was breathtaking to emerge from the forested ridge trail to an open area with limitless views to the south! The bald was the perfect place for a romantic snack and some cuddle time!

This was a very nice hike that I hope to do again. It was very peaceful and the veiw from the top is beautiful. This is one of the easier hikes I have hiked in the park, just watch out for the rocks. I wouldn't try to hike this in sandals.

I hiked after a rain and some of the trail was like a small creek. The view was terriffic. Why does the elevation profile show 4 miles? It is only 2 miles.

A great escape from the tourist-infested parking lot atop Clingmans Dome. The trail is very rocky on the way down, and unfriendly to sandals or tennis shoes.

We did this hike on 10/17/05...I've tried for several years to get this hike in... and the weather conditions have never been optimum for this hike until this year. It is often very, very foggy at the Dome... This year - the weather was PERFECT.. the visability went on forever... This is one of the easiers hikes.. for a SPECATULAR View toward Bryson City... GREAT place for a picnic... One of those places you never want to leave.
