Elevation Gain:1132 ft
Hike Time:3 hours

Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Loop

Summary: First and foremost, get permission from the camp to use this trail!!. This is an excellent trail, I saw deer, turkey, and numerous other wildlife not to mention the wide array of wildflowers along the way. The grade is not to bad and there are numerous stream crossing the best being the cable crossing over Matthews Creek. After Matthews Creek you will eventually come to Moonshine Falls and cave. This is an excellent rest place. The 40 foot waterfall makes for great photo ops. I am not going to tell you all the secrets of this gem but I strongly suggest you find them for yourself. The trail markers are sketchy and there are a lot of side trails so be sure to get a map from the camp and talk to them about conditions. This is a relatively secluded hike as the camp owns most of the trails. You may also want to get in touch with Caesars Head Park as part of the trail after Matthews Creek is shared with their trail system for a short way before cutting off to the right.
Trailhead: From Greenville S.C. proceed north on Hwy.276. stay on 276 towards Caesars Head. Asbury Hills Youth Camp enterance will be on your left before you reach the fire station. Enter the camp , take the first sight and proceed to the end of the road. The trailhead is on the right side of the road and looks like a dirt road heading uphill.(look for the red blaze on the tree). (Lat:35.079 Lon:-82.638)

IMPORTANT- The lower part of the loop that goes from the road to Moonshine Falls is closed to the public. That land is now private. Also, Asbury Methodist Camp provides a very basic xerox map at the trailhead. It uses rockpiles as landmarks to some trail junctions. Be careful because there are more rockpiles than shown. Excellent hike and worth doing.

Seems like there has been some changes on this trail since the last people reviewed it. Ice storms have taken its toll and in parts, especially the eastern part of the trail, trees are down everywhere across the trail. There seems to be some construction along the eastern side of the trail, about halfway from the camp to the falls. Posted no trespassing everywhere. I think very soon the loop will be lost forever. DONT do this hike unless you are with someone that knows the way or is VERY experienced - you could easily get lost with all the trail splits. Nice - but rather disappointing scenery wise.

I LOVE THIS TRAIL!! I went to Asbury Hills camp for at least 5 years and every year we would make this hike. Once we got there, we would sit on the rocks and eat lunch. After lunch, we would creek hike even further up the falls. It is beautiful and definitely a great hike! Also, Moonshine falls is impressive and also what we called the "cathedral" which was a very tall 'water wall' on the hike to Raven Cliff. You should definitely check it out!!! and if you have kids that are the camp age- Asbury is a great place to go!!!

Please note that hiking from the camp property is not available from May 15-until Labor day due to their summer camping programs. You can still get to Moonshine Falls from the Raven Cliff trail head on 276.
