Baldpate from the East (Andover) Side

Highlights:

Little used trail follows scenic waterfall, spillway
Near:Andover, ME
Scenery:
Distance:8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:2800 ft
Hike Time:5 hours
Difficulty:Moderate
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trail starts out with a beautiful 1/2 to 1 mile easy trek next to a series of Waterfalls. There are several picnic tables and excellent swimming holes along the way.

After following the brook at a nice even pace for about 2 miles the trail suddenly deteriorates. There is considerable erosion and at times it is hard to tell the trail from crisscrossing dry brooks. Here the vertical gain starts, not too steep but steady. This part of the trail is not heavily hiked nor well maintained.

After 3 miles you reach the junction with the Dunn Brook trail. The Dunn brook trail is more heavily used and here the trail is easier to follow. You may also meet other hikers. Only 1 mile to the summit.

As you ascend you start to have some boulders to crawl over. There are 3 small ladders (2 metal, 1 wood) tactically placed to assist you. You also start getting peeks of lovely vistas.

Trailhead: There are two ways to reach the trailhead

1. From Newry Maine, follow route 26 west thru Grafton Notch. Take a right onto B Hill road as you come up out of the notch. Follow B Hill road down past Dunn Brook. You will cross a small bridge and you will see a small trail on the right. It is poorly marked. There is a small parking area on the left.

2. From Andover Maine, take the East B Hill road about 5 miles.

The trailhead may be marked 'The Cataracts' which is beautiful series of waterfalls the trail goes past. (Lat:44.36 Lon:-70.53)

I have done this Hike many times. The fall is the best. I like to Hike through from route 27 and end on the Andover road side. After a long hike the falls are a great place to cool off. The summit can be windy, but it is wide open for a view. A few years ago I ran into a cow moose that was very aggressive just above the falls. I had to climb a tree to get away from it. It was the middle of march so maybe it was protecting a little one that I never saw. I have seen moose on this trail a number of times, but that was the first time one took any interest in me.

Below the Cataracts are a series of indian pots, one being about the size of a large hot tub that is carved out of the bedrock. An awesome swimming spot. Some of the indian pots have fish in them...halfway up the mountain.

Beatiful falls. A little steep but good exercise.
