Summary: This is a great, somewhat short hike that gets you into the high country without too much effort. Because the slope is south facing, you can get there early in the season. Be aware that the snowmelt makes the river difficult to cross. I went with friends last year, and they made it across on some avalanche debris. My dog did not. That attempt was Memorial Day weekend, 2003. In mid June, 2004, there were no problems with the crossing. The majority of the first 2 miles is in trees by the creek. You'll pass a great waterfall just before the basin. Once you get into the basin, you have a choice. Head right to climb to a shoulder of Earl Peak and a basin with great views (2 miles). Go left to the upper basin. The trail will peter out eventually, but there's not anywhere to get lost. We found tons of wildflowers, great little streams, and lots of nice campspots. Scramble up to a ridge to the left of the basin for amazing views of Mt. Stuart. Trailhead: I-90 East to Highway 970 (last Cle Elum exit). Follow 970 about 6 miles. Go left onto the Teanaway River Road. Follow road 13.5 miles to 29 Pines Campground. Take the right fork, signed road 9737 an additional 3 miles. Just before the bridge over Beverly Creek, go right on Road 112. Follow 112 to road end (about 1/2 mile).
