Summary: This hike is amazing. twelve falls can be seen near the trail with eight more available for bushwacking. Colorful hot springs and geysers can be seen to round out the hike for the ultimate yellowstone experiance. There are three fords of the bechler river that can be swift in the early year. Other than that the trail is well marked and without any maijor elevation gain. To start out you will se Bechler falls, an unimpressive cascade then Ouzel falls a mile off the trail. Following that is the amazing collonade falls, then iris falls, ragged falls and on and on. a trail cutting off the main path just after the bechler patrol cabin leads up the ferris fork to a hot pot and four more falls.
Trailhead: from Ashton, Idaho turn left following the road to cave falls. At the cutoff head toward the bechler ranger station. Drive 2 miles to the ranger station and park, the trailhead is behind the station. A shuttle car will need to be left at the lonestar trailhead near the old faithful area. This is by far one of my favorite hikes but it has gained a lot of popularity in the last 3-5 years. This last year we went in late October just before the park closed and still saw people. Fishing is great on boundary creek and prefer it over the main bechler river. This is a great area for short overnighters for in and out hikes but, if you have the time to do the whole trip, start from the trailhead near kepler cascades and leave a car at the bechler ranger station. This way is a lot less up hill.

I try to go here every year. I have hiked the trail 10 times and have camped in every campsite. I have seen bears, pronghorn elk, and moose.

I take this trip everytime I visit Yellowstone--12 times so far. Even after hiking and trekking all over the globe, this spot is one of my favorites and is an incredibly special place. There is no experience quite like soaking in the hot spring at night and staring up at the stars with steam rising all around. Add to this the river, waterfalls, other hot springs and an abundant supply of huckleberries along the trail.....paradise! Don't miss Dunanda Falls and the hot spring at the base of it if you can add an extra day to your trip.

I hate to see extra use of the area, but it really is quite incredible. I have been up the canyon several times on hiking and on horseback and I never get tired of its unexpected beauty.
