Kings Canyon NP - Big Baldy

Highlights:

Views of King's Canyon and Great Western Divide, wildlife
Near:Kings Canyon National Pk, CA
Scenery:
Distance:4.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1300 ft
Hike Time:2.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: The trail meanders up and down, but remains fairly easy. The elevation gain is very slight and even though you lose nearly as much as you gain in certain spots, the trail is well built.

Once you gain the ridgeline, the views open up and everything gets quite a bit easier. An awesome panorama of the Great Western Divide opens up as do jaw dropping vistas of granite drop-offs into Redwood Canyon

Looks back into King's Canyon are also quite a spectacle.

The trail wraps through pine forest and there is room for wildflower displays as well as insects and wildlife.

Trailhead: From the Big Stump Entrance Station on Highway 180, drive 1.5 miles east to the General's Highway. Turn right and drive nearly five miles just past the King's Canyon Overlook. The parking area and trailhead is clearly signed. Parking is on the right side of the road. The trail begins right from the parking area. (Lat:36.67186 Lon:-118.88234)

Did this on June 28 in the morning. Had it all to myself. Great views in all directions. There are a few steep spots but they are very short. The trail turns to rocks in some portions but it's very easy to stay on trail. You do hear humming coming from the TV tower building but it fades quickly. Centrail to a lot of campsites and the Grants Grove and Lodgepole areas.
