Summary: Although this is a really short, easy trail; it is well worth the stop while driving along scenic Hwy. 14. If you want a wonderful view of the north fork of the Virgin River and the northern end of Zion Natl Park, without all the people and hawkers who generally fill up the Zion Overlook viewpoint; yet, still need something suitable for small children and older adults -- this is the trail to take. A small paved pullout serves as a parking area, but is usually empty as people whiz by on their way to Brianhead ski area, Cedar Breaks, or the "back" way into Zion. This is a loop trail and as you begin, you could take either the L or R fork -- you'll still end up back where you started after an easy-to-follow walk through stands of spruce and fir. Midway along the trail is a large, wooden viewing platform nestled under the Bristlecones, and along the ridge of the cliffs overlooking the canyon. The northern end of Zion is in the background, beyond the Pink Cliffs.
Trailhead: The trailhead is located 18 miles E of Cedar City, Utah; adjacent to hwy U-14 (Lat 37.56733 Lon 112.84887 elev. 9400), look for brown USFS wooden sign just E of the Zion Overlook (popular viewpoint along main paved highway). To reach Cedar City from Las Vegas, take I-15 NNE towards Salt Lake City. After leaving Las Vegas, you'll drive past Mesquite NV, through the Virgin River pass in AZ, drive through St. George UT, PAST the turnoff to Zion/Hurricane, and continue driving on I-15 to the first exit for Cedar City (old section of town). Drive through Cedar City and watch carefully for the sign at the signal light to turn R on Hwy. 14 (towards Brianhead, Navajo and Duck Creek). This is a beautiful scenic drive along Hwy. 14 and makes a wonderful day trip from Las Vegas -- beware of snow in the winter. Brianhead is a popular ski area, and this is also the entry to Cedar Breaks Natl Park (lots more hiking trails)! It is a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas to Cedar City. (Lat:37.56733 Lon:-112.84887)
