Summary: Very hilly hikes in dense woods within one hour drive of Indianapolis. 20 minute drive from Bloomington. These trails are being rehabilitated by the volunteer organization, the Hoosier Hikers Council, www.HoosierHikersCouncil.org , on the third Saturday of every month, and by the state park itself, now that the state park staff has seen some of the HHC improvements. The old trails go straight downhill and become erosion ditches. New trail sections are being built to reroute the trails out of these ditches. The new trail sections are being built with proper drainage and grade for the soil to hold. Trail 8 is nearly complete. In the process of these improvements, on trail 2, some large stone stairways built during the Civilian Conservation Corp days were discovered and are being restored. Some of the stones are rock slabs that are 6 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 1 foot thick. See HHC website for info about plans for a new 10 mile hiking trail in BCSP. Trailhead: Outside of Nashville, Indiana. On State Road 46, east of Bloomington, west of Columbus. Approximately 1 hour drive south of Indianapolis on State Road 135 to Nashville. Can also take I-65 south to Columbus exit and go west on SR 46 to avoid going through Nashville during fall leaf color season which is Nashville's busiest tourest season. From east of Nashville, enter at the North Gate and pass through a very old covered bridge. From west of Nashville, enter at the West Gate. Trail 8 begins at the West Lookout tower nearest the West Gate. Daily car passes must be purchased at the gate. If you are planning on visiting several State Parks and State Recreational Areas during the year, purchase an Annual Pass at the gate.
