Summary: Another rainy weekend in the North east. I braved the weather again. It poured the entire hike and the trails were either streams or swamps. Promised Land State Park sites on top of the Pocono Plateau. Average 1600-1800ft. Which is the reason for all the water. The terrain is rolling forest with Hemlocks, Red Spruce, Oaks, Stripped Maples, Rhododendron, Mt Laurel and Low Bush Blueberries. There are two lakes in the Bruce lake Natural area and numerous creeks and swamps. Stream crossings are easy although today they were harder due to the 4+ inches of rain in the last 2 days. The area is very interesting because you traverse through different environments. The low areas you go into hemlocks and the higher ground you traverse through Oak and lowbush Blueberries. The area is also excellent for snowshoe Here are the trails I took: Bruce lake, right onto Rock Oak, Left onto telephone, left on Bruce lake, right on Egypt Meadow, right back onto Bruce lake Tr., to PA. Trailhead: 23 north to Port Jervis NY. Get on I84 West. Take I 84 past Lords Valley, and Blooming grove. Get off of exit 26 for Promised Land. At end of Ramp make a left onto 390. You will pass Bruce lake Trail Head on right. Go to next trailhead on left. This is the start. Shawn is correct when he says that there are many different terrains in the park....So really no matter what kind of trail you prefer there is something for everyone at this park!! It is also correct that some of the trails --especially when they head south toward the lakes can get quite wet, so if your squeamish about that sort of thing you should take note....but c'mon now it's only a little water!! =p A trail map is a must and it is available online and of course the good people at DCNR will mail you one. The number I have to call is: 570-676-3428. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous. You are responsible for informing yourself about these hazards and taking necessary precautions.
