Burnt Meadow Mountain

Highlights:

Short hike, great elevation gain, super views of mountains and lake
Near:Brownfield, ME
Scenery:
Distance:2.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1194 ft
Hike Time:2 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: Three steep ascents leading to small peaks. The second is the hardest because it is tedious. The third is the shortest and steepest - hand over hand climbing may be required. There is loose gravel on the trail making it more dangerous.

The view of Mt. Chocorua is very nice. Mt. Washington can be seen.

Crampons are a must if you hike this in the winter. A good family hike.

Trailhead: Route 160 approximately 1/2 mile south of the pond. Trailhead is not marked but there is an obvious parking area. The trail starts not at the center of the parking area but on the right side if you are facing into the parking area. (Lat:43.91842 Lon:-70.88285)

I took my wife there for our first hike of the season. 3/19/10 - 70 degrees!!! We both loved it. Challenging for new hikers, especially at the summit. Terrain is just challenging enough to get a good work out, took us 1 hour 45 minutes round trip. I would plan on 2.5 hours in case of a bottle neck getting to the top and skill level. I will hike this trail a couple more times this season.

Great hike, but probably will be closed off soon. Snowmobilers and atv people have been habitually abusive of the property. The owners had the deck ripped off the house to start a campfire. ATV's drive up the driveway, tear it up, and block it with their vehicles. Atvs drop off bags of garbage and old furniture in the trail. There has been garbage dumped into the woods. The landowners have children, don't feel safe, and the town seems to be encouraging this behavior because these recreation vehicles make money for the town.Look at the local paper and you will find reports of the same people arrested for drugs and poaching, but they won't bother helping with this situation. The owners won't complain for fear of retribution.

This was definitely a tough hike. I went up the North Peak trail and came back the Twin Brook Trail. If you have the time and arent looking for as tough of a trip up, go up Twin Brook, but if you want the challenge and time is an issue, head straight up the North peak trail. Gorgeous views at the top.

My husband Christian and I hiked this on 8/1/09. It is a nice hike, with a good little scramble. You will need spikes in the winter months. I agree that it is not for beginner hikers, but anyone familiar with the terrain of this area will be well prepared for the rocks. You can take kids up this mountain, but you will have to warn them about the cliffs and make sure that they don't get going too fast on the way down since the rocks can get slippery, even in a mist. Overall, the view is great and the summit is nice and cool. I do recommend this, even for expert hikers, since it will keep you in shape for the bigger mountains.

Hiked on 7/5/09 which was a mostly sunny day with a nice breeze. Trail was a bit more challenging then I expected as I do have a fear of heights but I made it just fine with support of my friend VB. My dog has a blast and the blueberries are now out.

This was a great hike, however, it is not intended for anyone with a fear of heights. We have just begun hiking after snowshoeing a few times this past winter. Everything that we read said it was for beginners. I don't see that this is any hike for beginners, as you are scaling over rocks. Once you reach the final section there is an area where you are climbing over rocks and looking back you see nothing other than the rock you just climbed over and from that point on there is no flat ground until you reach the summit. I like a challenge, but it's unfortunate that experienced hikers call this "easy" for those of us that are just beginning. Bradbury & Douglas are easy, & there's firm, flat footing.
