Katahdin, Dudley - Knife Edge - Saddle

Highlights:

Stellar Views, rigorous workout
Near:Millinocket, ME
Scenery:
Distance:5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:3000 ft
Hike Time:4.5 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Bush wacking
HikeType:Loop

Summary: You should plan on at least 2 hours to climb this 1.2 stretch of the Dudley trail. It is pretty steep and very rough, as is all of Katahdin. There are only 3 ways off of Pamola - the knife edge, Heelon Taylor to roaring brook or back down the Dudley trail.

The Knife edge is very rugged in places - the chimney is almost a technical climb. The Baxter peak side of the knife edge is a boulder scramble. The saddle trail has a 1/2 mile section of scree and is also very steep. A tough hike that you should be in shape for. The most difficult and time consuming portions of the hike are exposed and above tree line.

Trailhead: From Millinocket Maine follow the signs to Baxter State Park. At the entrance to Baxter you will have to pay a fee depending on in-state / out-of-state status and how long you will be in the park All overnight use must be made in advance by reservation. Day use is limited and restricted. Gate opens at 6:00 a.m. in the summers months. Access is very restricted in the winter months.

From the gatehouse take a right and drive 7 or so miles to the Roaring Brook trailhead.

Do not go until you read all the rules, etc at www.baxterstateparkauthority.com

I HAVE BEEN ON EVERY TRAIL LEADING TO BAXTER PEAK. SOME AS MANY AS 4 TIMES (HUNT TRAIL). I THINK THE KNIFE EDGE IS THE MOST AWSOME, AS I HAVE BEEN ACROSS IT 4 TIMES ALSO. DON,T GO ACROSS IT IF THE WEATHER EVEN HINTS TO BE BAD AS THERE IS NO ESCAPE ROUTE OFF IT TILL YOU GET TO THE DUDLY TRAIL, OR WORSE YET HAVING TO GO TO THE PEAK AND GOING DOWN THE CATHERDEAL TRAIL. I AM HOPING TO DO THE KNIFE EDGE NEXT MONTH. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE, HAPPY TRAILS.. JIM AUBE'
