Catch the Highlands Trail (blue diamond blazes) at the SW corner of the parking lot and go towards the lake. It soon joins the white blazed Echo Lake West Trail and together they follow the shore line, with several nice views along the way. At about the 1.5 mile point the Highlands Trail leaves to the left. Continue following white blazes to the trails end at an outstanding overlook at the north end of the lake. Retrace your route to your car.

Optionally, if you don't mind a short road walk, you can continue past the trails end on an unmarked, but well defined trail. Follow to brook and come out on Gould Rd. Turn right and catch the Echo Lake East Trail (white blazes) on right just past Sherwood Ct. Highlands Trail soon joins from left. Follow Highlands trail back to car

Trailhead: Take Route 287 to Route 23 North. Once in Newfoundland, make a right onto Echo Lake Rd. Go about 1 mile to the NWCDC office at 223 Echo Lake Road on left. Park here. Catch trail beyond the gate and walk toward lake.

A permit is required for this hike and can be purchased at this office M-F 8-4 and Sat (seasonally) from 8 till noon. (Lat:41.04691 Lon:-74.41047)
