Summary: This is a moderate to strenuous trail with a constant uphill climb until you reach the summit. The trail is a well maintained gravel base until the last half mile. From this point the trail is hard pack dirt and rocky. Difficulty would definitely increase during the rainy season. The Stanford Avenue staging area is also the western access to the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, a 29-mile hiking and riding trail through some of Southern Alameda County's most beautiful wilderness, and provides access to Mission Peak's 2,999 acres. Ensure that you have plenty of water before embarking on this hike, as there are very few spots to locate shade. The trail may be shared with equestrians, and dogs are allowed. There is no fee for parking, however on a busy day you may be required to park a little west, on one of the side streets. Trailhead: From I-680 in Fremont, exit at Mission Boulevard and go north. After about 1/2 mile, turn right (east) on Stanford Avenue and follow it to the parking lot at the end. I was impressed by my daughter's endurance. 4 hours roundtrip. Beautiful views as always. It was a perfect day, not too sunny or hot, yet clear enough for a great view. Hangliders were out, what a beautiful sight. The Mountain is green this time of the year and it is just beautiful. I highly recommend it, but you might have to work your way up and try a couple of times before you summit. Try going early in the morning before it gets too sunny and hot. There is no shade. Bring sunscreen, snacks and water and a jacket for the summit. Enjoy! I trekked up the winding paths, questioning existence as my legs chafed and exuded sweat. The sun bore down while my girlfriend moaned and complained. The hills shot up like monoliths jutting from the alfalfa gold while rodents scurried and cows moaned mournfully. My dog panted while the dust entered my nostrils and the shad caressed my neck nape. I love this hike. Eventually I will hike this again. We took the trail from Ohlone college. It was uphill the entire time. I might take the other trail next time. But I do like a challenge. My friends said this trail had much more to look at. We went through a mini forest which was a nice break from the sun and saw tons of lizards, snakes, squirrels and wild flowers. The summit was tough, but I enjoyed it more than the rest of the hike. It's WINDY at the top... bring a windbreaker and something to put over your ears when you're up there. But overall, I'll do this again when I want a challenge... but mainly, I like hiking where I can really enjoy the scenery with hills and valleys. This was just a gigantic hill. UP...Up.... Up I enjoy this hike, but it can get warm in the summer. You can make it a loop by taking a different way back to the lot easily. If you can get a ride back to your car take the ridge trail from the top across to Ed Levin park and down to Sandy Wool Lake. I did it yesterday and saw more coyote (2) than people (0) from Mission peak on. This hike definitely kicked my butt, but loved every minute of it! Just when you thought you were at the top, another hill popped up, but definitely worth it. Saw tons of squirrels and birds, plus a heard of cattle to meander through. Went on a sunny day and was beautiful, no place for shade, so go early and bring water. Am new to the bay area and would so go again. First time up yesterday. I would suggest getting a map that they provide. And definetly bring water! My dad and I started the trail with everyone else (lots of people) but then veered to the right to contiue on the Horse Heaven trail. This detour up to the summit is a lot steeper than the trail most taken. It is Beautiful!! lots of cows, and barely anyone on the trail. It takes you up the back of the summit to mission peak. lots of ups and downs, but great training on the legs! Easy hike. Been doing it for the past 10 years on both Saturday and Sunday. See a lot of regulars in the morning. Best round trip time - 90 minutes. If you can do this hike, up and down, in less than 2 hours then hiking Half Dome will be a piece of cake. This is my morning exercise. I agree with most, that the best scenery is on top. Great workout and I save the hundreds of dollars in private club fees. Awesome... My boys 5 & 8 also had great time hiking to summit and back... I am planning to hike here every saturday. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
