Summary: Beginning at the W edge of the lower parking area and begins with you walking parallel to the highway, downhill across the lower meadows area, crossing Ophir Creek through the center of the meadow (watch for birds, butterflies, etc.). As you enter the forest at the other end of the meadow, you leave the sounds of civilization behind and enter a forested world, tempted by the easy to follow trail leading you into pines & L at the fork (sign) for Ophir Creek trail - take as far as you'd like & return to pkg. Although you're supposed to be safe from mountain bikers on odd numbered days, this is the area where I've been run off the trail each time on even numbered days by outlaw bikers ignoring the rules as they race silently around hidden corners at high speed -- be ready to jump out of the way quickly, especially if the trail is shrouded in fog or rain clouds (common at this elevation). Storms happen quickly on this mtn so be prepared for rain. Nice trail for horses. Trailhead: From Reno, take U.S. 395 S as it heads towards Carson City. Take SR 431 (Mt. Rose Hwy) SW as it takes you past Mt. Rose Ski Area towards Incline Village at Lake Tahoe. Almost .75 mile after passing Mt. Rose summit, look for the parking area/trailhead/restroom bldg. on L side of hwy -- park here. There are signed kiosks with helpful brochures at this main trailhead for the Tahoe Rim Trail. Follow the signs taking you W back to the highway for the well marked beginning of the Tahoe Rim Trail (heading to Spooner Summit) and begin heading downhill on the trail. The next trailhead on TRT is almost 22 miles away, take it as far as you're comfortable going before turning back and retracing your steps, OR, follow these directions and take the turn to Ophir Creek trail, which takes you past Slide Mountain, Price Lake, and eventually reaches Davis Creek County Park (7 miles each way). Bikes are allowed on this section of TRT on EVEN days ONLY, but beware of outlaw bikes! What initial downhill and what waterfall? I'v been up nearly to the Tahoe Meadows and it's uphill all the way, no nice meadow at the start either. An excellent hike thouhg. especially as a conditioning hike early in the season. Nice in early Oct too. This hike is not for the beginner because it is downhill first then it is ALL up hill back. Very few vistas but a great workout. I saw a tree limb that looked like a dragon and the moss covered rocks in the waterfall were great for a pause on the trail. Price Lake was not worth telling friends about! Happy trails Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
