Pamola Caves

Highlights:

Ice Caves
Near:Millinocket, ME
Scenery:
Distance:1.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:175 ft
Hike Time:1 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:Poorly maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: A flashlight is not necessary to view these caves but might add some pleasure. The amazing thing about these caves compared to most ice caves is the symmetry of the rocks. The walls appear almost man-made.
Trailhead: From Chimney Pond in Baxter State Park, follow the Dudley trail 3/10s of a mile. You will find a sign showing the way to the caves. You must descend and hike along the base of a cliff. Before you reach the caves you must wiggle thru several tight spaces.

Of course, first you must hike to Chimney Pond. (Lat:45.91555 Lon:-68.50509)

We hiked to the Pamola Caves the third day the upper mountain was open in the spring, so for a little ways the trail was a waterfall, and there was water coming down the cliffs. Since the day was warm, the ice cold water was refreshing. Also, there was still a little ice left in the caves. Later in the season the trail will be drier, and you won't see any ice in the caves. Read the book Chimney Pond Tales before you go on this hike. It will explain who Pamola is, and you will enjoy the hike more.
