Summary: Peebles Island is a nature-lover's treasure. The Perimeter Trail winds through open meadows, a hardwood forest, along cliff tops, and past river rapids in it's two-mile loop. White-tail deer, beaver, skunks, hawks, owls and water fowl can be spotted, especially in the early morning hours. Numerous trails criss-cross the island and are preferable during the summer months when the park receives a high volume of visitors. Fishing with a permit is allowed, and picnic tables are available along the route. Though located within eye-shot of nearby towns, the rapids at the southeast shore drown out the sound of traffic, and three nearby uninhabited islands offer wilderness views to the west. Thus protected, Peebles Island offers nature walks that are both diverse and serene. Trailhead: Follow Route 787 north into Cohoes. Go right onto Ontario Street, then left onto Delaware Avenue just before crossing the Hudson River. Peebles Island parking lot is at the end of Delaware Ave. (Lat:42.78494 Lon:-73.68098) Trail Guides for Peebles Island Perimeter Trail: Best Seasons: Year-Round User Groups: Hikers, Dogs, Ranger Contact: Peebles Island State Park & Resource Center, 518-237-8643 Localhikes Reporter: This hike was submitted by Jennifer Hanson, who has posted 4 other hikes on this site Trail Reviews Page 2 of 3 Submit your own review Was a blustery day, my first hike outside since January. Went with Nina and Brad. Was a nice morning. Just a reminder, park in the Peebles visitor center lot. Its between the two bridges.Thjere were some good views of the two dams. The rivers were flowing pretty good. My boyfriend and I were looking for a trail close to Albany that would be doable in the snow without any sort of special equipment - just boots. This was great! The scenery was lovely, it was just the right length for the temperature (cold), and the trails were very clearly marked. We look forward to hiking this spot again. I enjoyed this hike a lot. It's not overly busy and fairly easy for anyone to hike. We are from Maine and picky at times with our hikes. Living in Cohoes (not the best area) it was suprising that Peebles even exists. My husband, dog and I will be back. We live on the island and this is one of my favorite walks. It's easy for beginners and beautiful along the way. I've come across deer, groundhogs and numerous birds. There is always something new. The path does get muddy and slippery after a good rain or snow melt, but if you are prepared it's worth the mess. It does get busy during the warmer months so be prepared to say hello...a lot. This place was interesting because of all the criss crossing paths. Maybe not the prettiest of all place during the early spring. But has potential. There were no maps available for our use so we did have to guess which trail we were on. We love Peebles Island for a short afternoon walk, and I've been there a few times now. Its an easy walk with a few slight hills, and beautiful scenery and a few great places to stop. The first time we went, there was a sign warning that a cougar had been spotted on the island and that was just a little bit nerve wracking but we never saw any big kitties. Its definitely a favorite escape from the city. It was a very nice place to go if you want to get your tires shot with a blow gun dart. The hike was wonderful, Especially when you are practically standing next to rushing rapids crashing over rocks, creating a slight waterfall effect. One of the best kept secrets in New York's Capital Region, a great place for walking, bird-watching, running or having a family picnic. Nothing too arduous, but amazing scenery as the perimeter trail winds along the top of a series of cliffs. It's amazing to ponder such a wild feeling place in the middle of the Troy-Cohoes-Waterford urban-industrial zone. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
