Summary: From the trailhead go south along the paved trail to the right of the restrooms. A few hundred yards along the trail the pavement will turn to dirt. There is an intermittant rail, always stay to the left of the rail. At 0.25 miles the trail will turn sharply left and ascend a stairway. Take the stairs to the top. At the top turn hard right and look for the fork in the trail. Take the left fork to loop back. The trail will continue through the forest most of the rest of the hike. Trailhead: From the junction of I-25 and I-40 in Albuquerque, go east on I-40 for 15 miles to the junction of NM-14. Follow NM-14 north 5.8 miles to the junction of SR-536. Turn left on SR-536 and follow the winding road about 13 miles to the top at Sandia Crest. Park at the lower parking lot and pay the park fee. The trailhead is at the south end of the lower parking lot.
