Wasson Peak - Sendero Esperanza Trail

Highlights:

Views of Tucson, Santa Rita and Catalina mountains, great desert hike
Near:Tucson, AZ
Scenery:
Distance:7.8 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:1322 ft
Hike Time:4 hours
Difficulty:Strenuous
Trail Condition:OK, but a few difficult spots
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: From the parking lot you'll leave south on the Sendero Esperanza Trail. Stay on this trail for 1.7 miles. Most of the first section is flat although towards the end of the 1.7 miles you begin to climb. You will come out on top of a ridge where you will meet the Hugh Norris Trail. Take a left onto that trail which follows the ridgeline up toward Wasson Peak. From the junction you have 2.2 miles until the summit. After much climbing and many switchbacks you will reach another trail junction. Take a left here and you only have .3 miles until the summit which is in view at that point. From the top you have great views of the Catalinas, Santa Ritas, Tucson mountains, Silverbell mine, and Picacho Peak. There are many signs along the trail so all of the junctions are well marked.
Trailhead: From Tucson head west on Ina Road. Go past the interstate and stay on Ina until you will take a left onto Wade road. This road will take you over a pass in the mountain range and it becomes Picture Rocks road. After the pass go a few miles until you reach Golden Gate road. Take a left onto it (it is a dirt road). After about 10 minutes you will reach the trailhead on the left side of the road. Just beyond the trailhead parking lot is a picnic area as well. (Lat:32.27049 Lon:-111.17306)

Excellent hike. Trail is well maintained and this week the flowers are in full bloom in all colors. Views are great from every part of the trail and the Peak is a great lunch stop. I like being alone up there but I couldn't in good faith not share the secret.

Just hiked this today,1/26/08. Great well maintained trail. Plan on trying the sunset/full moon hike in the future. Strenuous?, not so sure, 53 year old Scouter and thought the trail was not too bad. Strenuous, try Tanque Verde to the summit. As for this one, best trail I've hiked in three years in Tucson. Views on the way up and down are great especially if you know the area and know what your looking at.

I am sorry but my post was about the King Canyon Trail to the top of Wasson Peak. Not this route.

We did this just after Christmas in 2006. I went with my 2 teenage sons. I am in good shape for a 52 y.o. We had two camelbaks and 2 16 oz bottles. We took two head lamps and got to the top just before sunset. We waw a storm coming and the view was fantastic. The final crest ascent was very windy. After the sunset we ran back down in about 50 minutes. We needed the lights for the last part which was fairly flat. The trail was very well marked. We took a lot of pictures and my sons now use them as wall paper on their computers.

This trail starts low in saguaro forest, with many bird species, javelina, and evidence of mountain lion in surrounding area. The trail to the summit from the intersection with the Norris Trail is a modest grade, with only a single challenging stretch of loose rocks near the summit. Bring plenty of water. For interesting variations that minimize loops, park cars at two trailheads: Sendero/Norris, Kings Cyn/Sendero, Norris, King's Cyn.
