Summary: We took the scouts up here to get their first experience with heavy backpacks and moderate conditions. They were to pack their backpacks as if we were going on a three-day hike. There were a couple who had trouble on the terrain, but for the most part they all had a grand time. There are some thrilling scenes on this hike, especially at the top of the first hill. Pictures will follow. There are a lot of other trails we could have taken and made it longer, but we decided because of time constraints that we would keep it short. Next time we will probably take one of the trails that connect with the Appalachian Trail. This was a good start for the scouts and was a good shake-down hike to get them oriented.
Trailhead: Drive down Interstate 66 in Virginia to Route 17 North. About 8 miles in you'll come to the entrance to Sky Meadows State Park. Drive up the road until you get to the Visitors Center. It will cost you $4 to enter the park. The trailhead is approximately 300 feet from the Visitors Center. All of the trails are very clearly marked. (Lat:38.98519 Lon:-77.95933)
