Catoctin Mountain Park - Thurmont Vista

Highlights:

Short jaunt to Thurmont Vista, heavily wooded, modest views
Near:Thurmont, MD
Scenery:
Distance:1 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:185 ft
Hike Time:0.5 hours
Difficulty:Easy
Trail Condition:Well maintained trail
HikeType:Out and Back

Summary: This isn't the best portion of trail for taking in the views along this ridge, nor does it take you to the best view along the ridge. For that you'd be much better off seeking out Chimney Rock (you can take in Thurmont Vista and Wolf Rock on your way to Chminey Rock). However, if you are just looking for a short hike with an OK view and one that can be handled by the smaller hikers then this one is worth considering.

The hike itself is much like that of any other in the area. You'll see the typical Maples and Oaks that dominate the area and of course plenty of rocks. Like the rest of the Catoctin Mountains the area is largely metabasalt, created from higher pressure lava during tectonic events. Years of erosion have left these ancient rocks exposed and naturally all over the trail.

Upon reaching Thurmont Vista you'll find a nice bench from which you can enjoy the view of Thurmont to the southeast.

Trailhead: From Frederick, MD. Take Route 15 north to Thurmont, MD. Take Route 77 West, the exit sign is marked Catoctin Mountain Park. Travel approximately 3 miles west on 77 and turn right onto Park Central Road. The Visitor Center is on the right (stop in for maps). Continue past the Visitor Center on Park Central Road. You will be looking for the second parking area marked Charcoal Trail / Thurmont Vista. (Lat:39.64742 Lon:-77.44395)

Great, short hike. Late fall would probably be a better time because the view will be less obstructed. And it'd be less humid.

This is a short and pleasant trail to which I would return in the fall, when the lack of leaves would provide a better view of the vista. My dog particularly liked the deer skeleton found 5 feet from the trail!
