Summary: This makes for a challenging, but incredibly scenic day hike, or a nice 2 or 3 day backpacking trip. Warning: this is a rugged trip that will require some use of hands to climb. Trail is poorly marked. There is no water once you leave the shore of Lake George, so bring plenty. Rattlesnakes inhabit the area. Catch the trailhead just south of parking and enter on the blue blazed trail. Follow it for about 1/2 mile to jct.with the red blazed trail. Stay right here on the blue blazed trail, which follows the shoreline on relatively flat terrain to Montcalm Point. A short side trail will bring you to the point. Double back and begin the climb of First Peak. Spectacular views open up at certain points and just when you think they can't get any better, the next view tops the last. The trail continues over French Peak, then alongside the summit of 5th Peak (there is a short side trail to summit and shelter). Continue to red trail, turn left and return to vehicle. Trailhead: Take Route 87 to Exit 24 and head east on Bolton Valley-Riverbank Rd continuing toward Bolton Landing. After about five miles the road ends ends at a T-intersection with Route 9N (Lakeshore Dr). Turn left (north). The southern Clay Meadow trailhead is located about 4.5 miles north of the above intersection. Parking is on the east side of the road next to a water filled quarry. Park at the quarry lot, or at the overflow lot just to the north. I took the trail just as the description said. I did the entire loop in about 7 hours with a very long lunch. As far as water, I thought there would have been plenty along the way to filter. On the east side of the tongue, there were many ups and downs that required the use of hands. The trail was marked, but you really had to pay attention during some of the hike. The views were incredible. I would definitely recommend this hike to a good hikers without little kids! There are a couple different way of getting in and several legs you can do at different times... or all at once. I did the 5th Peak leg from Clay Meadows in about 3 hours with an extended lunch at the top. I even brough the dog and he was fine. On 3/31/09 There were some challenging icy spots, but otherwise very nice. This hike was just as advertised. The only things I would note from the summary is that we found plenty of water on the trail above Lake George, so if you have a filter you should be fine and save yourself the trouble of carrying. I also thought the trail was well marked, except for MontCalm Point, which we missed due to poor marking. The trail is challenging with many interesting areas. The views are about as good as they get, and that's no exaggeration. Highly, highly recommended. Notice: Traveling in the backcountry can be hazardous.
