Summary: This hike is best enjoyed in in mid-summer after the rush of thru-hikers have made their way onto Virginia. The high elevations will provide a nice releif from summer heat. But beware as we ended a hike from Roan Mt to Carvers Gap in July the temp was 45 degrees as a cold rain moved in the area. As you climb out of the gap you will see flame azalea, Catawba rhododendron and yellow buckeyes, which peak in June and July. After Jane Bald the AT swings along the north side of Grassy Ridge, a flat campsite is at 1.6 mi and has a good spring. At 3.0 mi the trail reaches Low Gap and the Stan Murray Shelter. At 4.7 mi you reach Yellow Mt Gap, follow the blue blaze to the Overmountain Shelter. Even if you are not staying overnight this is a great place to have lunch with great views. From Yellow Mt. Gap the trail climbs to Little Hump Mt. more great views and then onto Hump Mt. You will then descend to Doll Flats and onto US19E
Trailhead: US 19E Trailhead: From the junction of US19E and TN 143, go E for 3.9 miles. A small pullout at a break in the guardrail has room for 2 or 3 cars but not recommended see shuttle service list.
Carvers Gap Trailhead: From US19E in Roan Mt TN, follow TN 143 for 12.8 miles through Roan Mt State Park. Carvers Gap and the AT are at the state line. Parking area on right.
This is a car shuttle hike and best enjoyed as a backpack but an optional dayhike is possible. The hike is described as south to north. Shuttle info:
